Istanbul and Venice were gorgeous destinations with each city bringing its own distinct vibe and atmosphere. Istanbul offered a vibrancy unlike anywhere else, and I found the rich tapestry of cultures as enriching as it was exciting. Venice is known for its iconic canals, but I was delightfully surprised at how much of the land is actually waterlogged. The town is steeped in history that has captivated me and left a lifelong mark.
Captivating Croatia: Split’s Ancient Wonders
Split, Croatia, offers a city with ancient wonders, including the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace, and tantalizing local cuisine. Split felt like stepping back in time, as the city was founded in the 3rd or 2nd century BC. We spent the day exploring the Roman ruins and the world’s oldest Catholic cathedral, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, which was built in the 4th century AD as the Mausoleum of Diocletian and consecrated in the 7th century AD.
Wonders At Every Turn
Besides the big stops like those mentioned above, the cruise also offers the chance to experience smaller destinations. Trieste, where we departed from, is a little town along the Italian coast and is an unexpected highlight. This maritime gateway is littered with castles, cathedrals, churches, and archaeological sites to explore. Salerno, although well-known, remains a great treat for everyone, and it is said that the city’s patron saint, Saint Matthew, has relics stored in the crypt of Salerno Cathedral.
